Wednesday, March 10, 2009--Pattaya & Bangkok

10:00a--Another beautiful day here in Thailand. Everyone slept in this morning, then had a light breakfast before getting cleaned up and packed for our drive up to Bangkok. The driver will pick us up around 11 a.m. and we'll be at our hotel in Bangkok by 1 p.m. We are staying at the De Arni ( http://www.agoda.com/asia/thailand/bangkok/de_arni.html ). Not sure what our plans are while we are in BKK, but I am sure we will stay busy. Julian wants to get some pad siew gai at his favorite place in Bangkok, so we will probably go there for lunch. Then possibly some time at the computer center, Panthip. This is a huge place with 5 floors of computer-related shops. Sometimes you can get good bargains there--sometimes not. But everything is negotiable! :) We will update the blog later today.

10:00p--Our trip up to BKK was uneventful. The drive took about 2 hours and was smooth. Our hotel is quite nice and modern. We are on the top floor, so away from the street noise (which can be rather loud here until very late into the night).

Immediately after we arrived, we headed to MBK so that Julian could get his pad siew gai. It was quite good and inexpensive (lunch for three of us cost about $7 US). We then wandered around the bazaar area of MBK, but didn't really find anything of interest. We then wandered over to the new Museum and Cultural Center. The design is somewhat like the Gugenheim or the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian. Quite nice, but the art collection will take a while to grow.

After the museum, we went to Paragon mall, one of the high-end malls here. We picked up some snacks and also what we thought was Thai iced tea mix (we were correct, as it later turned out, but we weren't positive at the time). Then we took the Skytrain back to our hotel where we cleaned up and rested a bit before heading out to dinner.

Oh, while we were shopping, Wit headed to Chatachuck, the huge openair market, to find some plants to take back to Pattaya. As we were heading out to dinner, he showed us the plants he bought (the security guard is watching them in the hotel parking lot)--several red banana plants and about 5 other plants that I did not recognize. The minivan going back to Pattaya will be full, LOL!

Dinner consisted of delicous street food (but we forgot to take the camera, so no pictures). We wandered through the street market on the way back to the hotel, but didn't see anything interesting. When we got back to the hotel, we just took it easy and retired around 10p.

Tomorrow: A full day in Bangkok, but no specific plans.
